Indian army Sunday said it killed a militant in gunfight in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir.
The gunfight broke out in Handwara area of frontier Kupwara district, about 90 km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
According to Indian army spokesman Col. Rajesh Kalia, the gunfight was triggered in the morning.
"Today morning at around 5:00 a.m. (local time) a gunfight broke out at village Anawan-Langate in Handwara, during which a militant was gunned down," Kalia said. "A weapon has been recovered from the spot and operation in the area is going on."
Indian army and police have not suffered any damage in the stand-off.
A separatist movement and guerilla war challenging New Delhi's rule is going on in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. Gunfights between militants and Indian troops take place intermittently across the region.
Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
