The UN has given the Myanmar government one year to establish a framework in order to creating conducive condition in Rakhine state for the voluntary Rohingya return.
To this effect, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Myanmar government, UNDP and UNHCR has been extended for one year following an agreement on Wednesday by all parties.
The exchange of letters was signed by the Ministry of Labour Immigration and Population of Myanmar, and representatives of UNHCR and UNDP in Naypyidaw on Tuesday, said a press release.
The tripartite MoU was first signed on 6 June 2018 as a necessary step to establish a framework for cooperation between the UN and the Government aimed at creating conducive conditions for the voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable repatriation of refugees from Bangladesh.
Besides, it is also for helping to create improved and resilient livelihoods for all communities living in northern Rakhine State.
In the exchange of letters, all parties reaffirmed their full commitment to the timely and effective implementation of the MoU.
Bangladesh is shouldering over a million Myanmar nationals since August 2017 after they fled being victim of atrocities by Myanmar army.
