The Maldives has received foreign aid amounting to 197 million US dollars amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, local media citing the President's Office reported here Saturday.
Policy Secretary of the President's Office Aminath Shauna said that the country has received aid in the form of loans, grants and technical assistance from international institutions including the World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), Islamic Development Bank (IDB), International Monetary Fund (IMF), OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) and European Investment Bank (EIB).
She further revealed that the country had received vast amounts of material aid in the form of medical goods such as personal protective equipment (PPE) and food supplies from neighbors and friendly countries including India, China, Japan, the US, Bangladesh, Canada, UAE, Australia, and European Union countries.
Shauna said that the government has strictly adhered to agreements which specify how and where aid funds should be spent. She added that the government is confident of raising more financial assistance from the international community in order to kickstart an economic revival in the aftermath of COVID-19.
