A 4.9-magnitude earthquake rocked the central Philippines on Wednesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The epicenter of the earthquake was recorded 14 kilometers southwest of Salcedo, a town in Eastern Samar province of the central Philippines around 10:48 am local time (0248 GMT) with a depth of 5 kilometers.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, said the Phivolcs.

The Philippines sits in the region called the Pacific Ring of Fire where continental plates collide, causing frequent earthquakes and volcanic activities, reports Xinhua news agency.

In February, more than 100 people either died or were injured when a 6.7-magnitude temblor rocked the southern Philippine city of Surigao.
