BJP poised to form Tripura Assembly, Congress leads Meghalaya

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to form government is Tripura Assembly while the Congress has taken a firm lead in Meghalaya, according to initial results.

The BJP is leading in more than 30 seats in the 60-seated Tripura Assembly.

If the leads are converted to wins, Tripura will become the 20th State where the BJP or its alliance is in power, as per a report on The Hindu.

Tripura has remained under Left rule for 25 years. The incumbent Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, dubbed India's poorest Chief Minister, has garnered nation-wide respect.

The BJP, which has forayed into the northeast with its maiden win in Assam, wrested power in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh too.

Finding a foothold in Tripura is crucial for the saffron party as it will make it a truly national party with its presence in every State.

And Tripura will be the 20th State to be ruled by the BJP or a BJP alliance.

Meanwhile, Congress established comfortable lead in Meghalaya bagging 11 seats while the National People’s Party is close to emerging as the runner-up.

The UDP and HSPDP have opened account in the new Assembly.

The elections in Meghalaya were a direct contest between the Congress and BJP.

As days passed, it became a multi-cornered fight with the United Democratic Party (UDP) and National People’s Party (NPP) turning rivals.
