Muslim population in USA to become second-largest

The Muslim population in USA is set to become the second-largest religious group after Christians by the year 2040.

A new report said there were 3.45 million Muslim people living in the US in the year 2017 representing about 1.1 per cent of the country’s total population.

The Pew Research Centre study finds that the number of Jewish people outnumbers Muslims at present as the second-largest religious group, but that is expected to change by 2040 because "the US Muslim population will grow much faster than the country's Jewish population."

By 2050, American Muslims will total 8.1 million or 2.1 per cent of the population.

The number of followers of Islam in the US has grown at a rate of about 100,000 per year because of the migration of Muslims and higher fertility rates among Muslim Americans, Pew Centre found during its demographic and survey research, reports al-jazeera.

The study read, "Since our first estimate [2007] of the size of the Muslim American population, the number of US Muslims has been growing rapidly."

Christianity is by far the largest religion in the United States with different denominations representing about 71 per cent of the population.
