THE world observed "No tobacco day" on May 31, 2016. The day was also observed in Bangladesh with renewed pledge to drive out tobacco menace from the country. The World Health Organization will soon recommend designs of new packaging for cigarettes which will look less appealing and the young generation will not be easily inclined to take up smoking. World No Tobacco Day highlights the risks associated with tobacco. Some school going teenagers are also seen smoking cigarettes without knowing the impact of smoking on their health. Many young people take up smoking just for fun but ultimately carry on with for rest of their lives. According to medical scientists, tobacco smoking harm our health in many ways as it contains 4000 dangerous chemicals and many of these chemicals are identified as positive causes of cancer. Around 46 million people in Bangladesh are tobacco consumers and every year around 95,000 people die of tobacco related diseases. We must be united against consumption of tobacco in any form to save our future generation from tobacco menace. Communication and social media should start waging powerful campaigns highlighting the destructive nature of tobacco.
