DHAKA is one of the busiest cities in the world where women have to travel long distances for work. But these women are often subjected to harassments as they travel by public transports. The main reason behind such harassment is a high level of gender inequality prevailing in our society. Introduction of exclusive public transports for women can go a long way to reduce this social milieu. In our country, generally there are 9 seats for women and children at the front in the buses. But very often these seats are occupied by male passengers who are normally reluctant to move. Sometimes women are also harassed by stalkers in the buses. People generally feel that exclusive transports for women will help ensure women's safety. But this has become a highly debatable issue in the present world. Some advocates for women's rights have suggested that segregation tactics are likely to deepen the gender divides and as such long-term equality between men and women will be difficult to achieve. The government should consult all concerned agencies, women activists and civil society to decide what can be done to ensure women's safety.
