Waste management in Dhaka city

Waste management in Dhaka city

I wrote on the issue in this column a couple of days ago. Now I feel morally obliged to write again as wastes of sacrificial animals are yet to be cleared from different parts of the city. The air in Dhaka still stinks and wastes are still spread out in places. Complicated management and dumping of waste are behind ecological contamination in Dhaka city. The two city corporations are confounded in attempting to deal with the issue.
Normally in other parts of the year, Dhaka city produces 3000 tons of household wastes everyday. This, coupled with wastes of Eid-ul-Azha sacrifices, has aggravated the situation further. To make matters worse, wastes from clinics and production units in and around the city have turned into a matter of serious concern for the city authorities.
Household wastes are being tossed to the streets and open places. This should be stopped by raising awareness among the people. At present, wastes are being reused as raw materials for production of various items. It is, therefore, vital that wastes should be appropriately re-used to derive financial benefits for the nation.
