UBER is a mobile phone app which connects a taxi cab with a passenger. Under this arrangement, every taxi cab has global positioning system (GPS) to observe the location of the taxi. But the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) treats Uber as unlawful and illegal at as time when it is now in operation in 78 countries in the world.
Uber does not have its own transport, garage or other infrastructural set-up. Through this app, a person can easily detect the location of the nearest taxi which is registered with it. Existing law of the land should be amended to allow Uber to run in the country.
In digital age, taxi cab guidelines should be updated and a separate registration system may be introduced, if necessary. The passengers can measure initially the possible fares of their destinations. Besides, as drivers are registered with Uber, their identity can be known easily.
The existing taxi service is well known in Dhaka. Uber can make life easy for the commuters. The BRTA should realise this.
