PEOPLE were shocked and dismayed at the incident of a member of parliament slapping an upazila election officer of Bashkhali, Chittagong. The MP slapped the officer because he failed to work according to his wish! Later the Election Commission (EC) postponed voting of all union councils of Bashkhali. The incident is only an expression of the way the EC has been conducting elections in the last three years. The EC is always reluctant to take action against the real offenders as a result of which the situation has now gone out of control. The EC is not a weak body as it has been given adequate administrative authority to conduct elections effectively, but lack of honest intentions to utilize the authority has made it ineffective. It was indeed a sad precedent and if the election commission does not take action, it will tarnish its image further.
