Save the Buriganga

RIVER Buriganga is the lifeline of Dhaka but it is dying a painful death due to our apathetic attitude. I remember during my childhood, I used to ride boats on the river and enjoy the pristine beauty of the Buriganga. The wide and deep river of those days is no more there and now it has turned into a narrow, stinking, dirty canal. But we must clean up the river so that our environment can become much cleaner and healthier. The government should look into this problem and take the initiative to clean up the river Buriganga. Once the Hazaribagh tannery industry is completely shifted from its present location, river pollution can be reduced. The Buriganga has now become one of the dirtiest rivers in the world and it will require a sustained cleaning operation to bring back its old glory. At the same time, the ecology of the area around the Buriganga and marine life must be protected. With a population of around 16 million, it is important we save the river from complete extinction.
