WE have a good number of Civil, Electrical, and Computer engineers in our country who are taking their degrees from different reputed institutions. But unfortunately we are still branded as a developing country which indicates that we have lot of negative aspects too.
Bangladesh is divided into seven administrative divisions to properly run the affairs of the country. These divisions are Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chittagong, Barisal, Khulna, Rangpur and Sylhet. Recently some more divisions have been proposed consisting of Comilla, Mymensing and Chittagong Hill Tracts. As per the Population and Housing Census conducted by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics in 2011, we find that population density per square kilometre in different divisions are: Barisal 613, Chittagong 831, Dhaka 1,502, Khulna 699, Rajshahi 1,007, Rangpur 960 and Sylhet 779.
Now, with a vast population like this, we need the services of qualified people for development of the country. For example, there has to be an electrical engineer for a specific electrical engineering job, and not business graduates or otherwise. We often find that people of different disciplines are employed in work areas that do not match their academic backgrounds.
Until now health condition in our villages is not satisfactory as there are not enough doctors in the villages to take care of the villagers. Moreover, the doctors employed by the government in different upazila health complexes mostly stay out of their work places. In this way people are being deprived of the existing medical facilities in the rural areas.
If our engineers are selected on merit basis for different positions and if doctors are present in their stations throughout the year, the state of the country is bound to change. Similar situation exists in other areas also which is pulling back our development efforts. Dishonesty in selection and posting of officials is rampant in the country which needs to be controlled with strong hands. It will be most unfortunate if the nation remains deprived of the services of its qualified citizens who are provided higher education at the public universities at subsidised costs. The population of Dhaka city is increasing day by day. So we need to provide suitable education for the growing number of students. If these students do not motivated to work with honesty, wheels of development will falter and all our efforts to bring about economic development in the country will go be inconsequential.
We just need to reverse the negative trend. We need an open system to select right people for the right job.
