DHAKA South City Corporation (DSSC) has been reassessing the holding taxes for household, commercial and industrial units under its jurisdiction. The city dwellers are in panic. Holding tax is determined on the basis of 10 per cent of the assessment amount. Let me clarify it. From the annual house rent two months' rent is deducted as maintenance charges. Of the remaining 10 months' rent, 10 per cent amount is considered annual holding tax. Tax amount will be lower when there is a bank loan on the property. If the owners do not rent the house less tax is imposed. The city corporation authority declared that tax rate would not be increased. But the assessment figure will be higher than the previous figure on an aggregate.
We would therefore like to request the mayor of DSSC to reduce the rate to 8.0 per cent from the present 10 per cent.
