Pervasive corruption: No ray of hope

RECENTLY Transparency Interna-tional Bangladesh has published a report on spreading corruption. To our knowledge the real picture may be even worse. It is too well-known to elaborate that corruption has spread through the length and breadth of our society and has become a part of our everyday life. Corruption is no longer regarded as a crime. On the contrary, it has become an instrument of power and influence. The corrupt people in our society with their money buy power and build an invisible protective wall around them to keep themselves safe and secure. The crooked and dishonest people are termed as street smart people. In most government offices nothing seems to work if we do not grease the palm of the officers with speed money. No matter how hard the government tries to establish good governance it will not produce desired results if corruption is not curbed if not eliminated. Pervasive Corruption is the biggest hurdle to overcome poverty in Bangladesh. We do not see any light at the end of the tunnel, if corruption continues to reign supreme.
