A law-enforcing agency (LEA) is an agency which enforces laws of the land. There are several agencies serving in Bangladesh. After independence we had a hard time in establishing proper LEAs in the country. Now these agencies are fairly established. There is no question about their competence and abilities. But there is a small problem which makes job of these agencies difficult at times. It is political interference for which law has to be relaxed and system loosened. They get corrupt in this way. There are enough examples to the effect that people face harassment while seeking justice through law-enforcement agencies. Two incidents must be mentioned to appreciate the success of LAEs in Bangladesh. One is combating JMB and the second one is combating militant ioutfits. In 2006, LEAs successfully stalled the activities of JMB by arresting its leader Shayokh Abdur Rahman from Sylhet. And now these agencies are successfully combating other such militant outfits. On the other hand, few incidents like forced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, etc. have tarnished their reputation. LEAs performance in combating terrorism has been appreciated by foreign countries.
Our LEAs have the ability to handle critical situations. Only a few corrective actions are required to make them more reliable to people. Most important thing is to make them free from political interference and friendly to the common people.
