THE agony that one has to go through to avail public transports is well known to everybody. It is particularly painful during office hours as our public transports are inadequate to serve the increasing urban population and more so women commuters. Recently the ladies are not being allowed by conductors to board on a bus on the ground that there is no seat available for them. The helpers in bus help male commuters to get in, but they refuse to let any woman in. Working women of Dhaka city have to face this problem every now and then even beyond office hours.
The system of reserved seats for ladies which was introduced to facilitate women's travel is now being used as a boundary for women. It seems that only male passengers have the privilege to stay standing in bus to reach their destinations. But women do not have that right which means they are underprivileged.
The authority should address the problem to ensure basic gender equity. Hope the authority will provide proper guidelines to solve the problem and ensure equity for women.
