THE objective of this letter is to draw the attention of Mayor of Dhaka City North, Mr. Anisul Huq. We the inhabitants of Mirpur area in Dhaka city, have to spend sleepless nights due to mosquito menace which is worsening day by day. Particularly as the sun goes down, mosquitoes start swarming in from all directions and make life miserable for us. The presence of mosquitoes is so rampant that people need to take shelter under the mosquito nets as soon as the night falls.
The measures taken by the City Corporation to fight the menace are too inadequate to cope with the large army of mosquitoes. The mosquitoes simply rule the area after dusk. Due to their strong presence, children cannot pursue their studies on their tables and need to go to bed with books under mosquito nets.
Mayor Anisul Huq is a well-travelled man who has the experience of visiting several mega cities of the world. I would like to humbly ask him if he has seen any other city in the world which is tormented by mosquitoes like Dhaka. He is an open minded person and would like constructive criticism. Since assuming office, he has taken a number of decisions that have been praised by the citizens of North Dhaka. Removing unauthorised bill boards and moving the long standing permanent truck stand from Tejgaon are some of the excellent jobs done by him. May I draw his attention to this mosquito menace and seek his help so that people of Mirpur can live in peace and have a good night's sleep after their day's work.
