A large number of labourers have been going abroad for employment. They have been sending in good amount of foreign exchange every month. Most of the labourers who went for employment in foreign countries do manual jobs as they do not possess technical or professional skill and knowledge. Their earnings are comparatively lower than migrants from other countries which export mostly professional and technically skilled manpower. They earn significantly high amount of money per head. Bangladesh needs to export professionals and skilled manpower.
Sending physicians abroad for employment is a good option, but we need to produce more doctors in order to export more. To produce a higher number of doctors we need more medical collages. On the other hand, the government is committed to provide health services to people in both rural and urban areas. But it has become difficult for the government to find doctors to work in rural areas and serve health centres there. This problem has been persisting for quite some time and cannot be addressed if Bangladesh cannot produce enough qualified physicians. It is therefore necessary to set up public medical colleges in all the district headquarters to address the growing demand for doctors at home and abroad.
In the second phase, seven medical universities may be set up at the seven divisional cities for providing post-graduate level courses in medical science in order to provide MBBS doctors with an opportunity to pursue higher studies. These universities should also impart special courses and training to help MBBS physicians to upgrade their skills and knowledge.
Bangladesh has enough teachers for medical courses at the graduate and post-graduate levels. It is a great advantage and all the government needs to do is to utilise this opportunity and set up and operate such medical colleges and universities. The government should take up a five-year action plan to set up such medical colleges in each district in phases and later set up post-graduate medical universities in each divisional headquarter.
