Managing garbage at Dhaka

DHAKA, the capital of Bangladesh, lacks efficient garbage management. As a result, garbage is found everywhere across the city. Garbage are aplenty at roadsides, around the parks, by the rivers and lakes, inside and outside the trash cans, around the grocery shops, beside the schools, colleges and at places surrounding the playgrounds.
Rampura Bazar road, Malibagh, Noyatola, Shantinagar are the areas where there is total lack of waste management. Although there are trash cans in these areas, but wastes are seen to be more on the road than in trash cans.
During rainy season these wastes spread all over the places and produce an unhealthy smell. Garbage is clogging the roads and blocking the drains and thus making the drainage system inoperative. The situation is particularly bad during rainy season as water clogs up in these roads and adds more to the sufferings of the people. In addition, the garbage that is collected is not efficiently managed and poor garbage management is also becoming a threat for our environment as well.
Garbage management process needs to be improved by introducing new tools and methods. It is high time for the authorities to take proper steps to manage waste and create awareness on cleanliness.
