BANGLADESH is about to be a middle-income country. There had been an all round material development in the country. But keeping the city clean remains a major headache for the authorities. There has been sporadic efforts to maintain the city tidy, but in absence of a long-term planning, the mission to keep the city clean has eluded us. Introduction of trash bin can be cited as an example. The south city corporation mayor installed trash bins all round. It is undoubtedly a great step forward. But sadly, the trash bins are not being maintained properly like many other things in the city. For that reason, they are becoming bundles of waste.Â
As a result, waste-odour spreads around the place. Another problem with waste bins is that garbage is not regularly collected and as a result they are overflowing and make the place dirty and untidy. As it is one of the biggest steps so far, the government should extend a helping hand in this respect. A publicity campaign should be made to raise the awareness level of the people. In this way, there may be many more similar initiatives. The message of Dhaka South City Corporation is quite loud and clear, we have to keep our beloved city clean. Â Clean life is better life.
