IN spite of the government's previous efforts to ensure food autarchy in the country, such progress has been interrupted either by natural hazards or a certain level of incompetence. According to recent media reports, the country's food supply situation may be in further problem due to loss of Boro crop caused by flash floods in the Haor region. Although food crisis in Bangladesh is not something new, reasons for the worsening rice crisis cannot be overlooked. Apart from flash floods, other factors may also affect further progress towards the improvement in the situation.
The government is committed to erase any trace of hunger problem in the country and has shown signs to an extent of fulfilling such promises.Â
It is quite impossible for a country to prosper without ensuring food security and making sure that unprivileged people in the rural areas are not dying of hunger. While governmental commitment remains commendable at least on paper, key areas of the problem must be identified. The rice crisis should be brought to attention of the upper echelons of the government. As the country cannot survive without food, Bangladesh cannot afford to take any chance.
