AS we all know that Dhaka is one the mega cities in the world and it is the most populated one in Bangladesh. The Greater Dhaka Area has a population of over 18 million as of 2016. On the other hand, environmentally Dhaka is one of the most uninhabitable cities. Its air is much too polluted. Roads are too much narrow. Despite all these, Dhaka is moving forward with many mega development projects. Whereas development projects should be incorporated for every stakeholder and according to its demands, Dhaka`s urban planning does not include everyone. For this, we need to think about the preservation of human life and energy, rather than superficial beautification. Dhaka also needs to consider conformity with an orderly development plan carried out in stages.
Urban plans are required for promoting trade and commerce, preserving historic buildings and buildings of religious significance, developing a city worthy of public pride, promoting happiness, health and comfort of all residents and control over future growth. If it is done, then Dhaka will become a model of sustainable urban planning movement. So, it is very much important to know that urban planning of Dhaka should be guided by a sustainable planning and management vision. Â
