THE government is committed to providing healthcare services to people in both rural and urban areas. With an increasing number of students, the demand for medical education is expanding. We are already short of  qualified physicians and it is a big challenge before us, particularly in the rural areas as doctors are unwilling to serve in the upazila health complexes. This is a long persisting problem and if it is not addressed properly, it would further complicate healthcare problems in the countryside.
It is necessary to set up public medical colleges at district level to address this practical problem. Considering that Sunamganj is surrounded by tea gardens and also a remote area, it will be an appropriate location for a full-fledged public medical college to impart undergraduate medical education. It will undoubtedly improve the standard of health services for the people of the district and adjoining areas. Bangladesh has enough teachers to impart medical courses at the graduate and post-graduate levels and the government should utilise this opportunity and include in its list of projects a self-contained public medical college in Sunamganj.
