A detailed and technically important safety matter related write-up on Russian Nuclear Power Plants, and related nuclear regulations that need to be enforced was very lucidly covered by Dr. Rahman's (UK retired Nuclear Power Plant safety expert), in a local English daily on January 11. It should be a mandatory and important guideline for all who are directly or indirectly related to our "Russian Nuclear Power Plant" misadventure.
Importantly, we should now seriously consider this 'unwise' decision, and cancel this venture in overall national interest; and rather go for a conventional thermal power plant at the same location if we want to avoid a national nuclear catastrophe. The scientists at the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) who are about to go for this hugely expensive and unsafe and totally irrational Russian plant may review the situation once again.
They should go through the write up by the experienced and learned ex-UK expert on 'Safety of Nuclear Power Plant'. As stated by Dr. Rahman in his write-up; that the former Soviet block states of Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia and other ex-Soviet Republics had to modify and add all needed safety modifications to their nuclear power plants by EU Supervised nuclear experts, before being admitted to the European Union.
In this writer's opinion Dr. Rahman's half page write-up should be published in all English language dailies, and translated and published in Bangla dailies; in our national interest so that all are aware of the potential dangers of the proposed Russian Nuclear Power Plant, which is also going to be highly expensive in installation, operation and handling and safe removal of the spent fuel rods of the proposed power plant.
This writer strongly feels, that the half page report be read by all and if possible Dr. Rahman may be asked to talk about this critical matter on our national radio and TV, to create public awareness of this potentially dangerous power plant that we unwisely plan to install in Bangladesh. Let us better be safe than being sorry thereafter.
