NCC election: A ray of hope

AFTER a long time, the common people saw a free and fair voting being held in Narayanganj City Corporation election in our country and all of us felt greatly relieved. The environment was festive and the voters could cast their votes peacefully without any untoward incident. Nothing like false voting, use of force and ballot hijacking were reported and it was extraordinarily peaceful and quiet. In the past we saw elections were rigged, opponents were threatened, innocent voters were scared away and fake ballots were produced to snatch victory. In NCC elections, nothing of the sort happened and it was a welcome change for us.
The Election Commission and the government were determined to maintain law and order and conduct the elections in a free and fair manner. The ruling party-backed candidate Selina Hayat Ivy won the elections second time in a row. Her firm stand against crime, corruption and muscle power contributed to her meteoric rise in popularity among the Narayanganj people. Ivy proved once again that if a leader can feel the pulse of his or her people, he or she has nothing to fear. The opposition has been waging a movement for free and fair election and at last it brought some ray of hope. Although the opposition lost in this election, it can claim a moral victory from the NCC election. We must not forget that it is only through a free and fair poll peoples' rights can be established.
