Keeping footpaths free for pedestrians

RECENTLY the south city corporation mayor embarked on an abortive  mission to free footpaths around Gulistan from hawkers. But on the very next day we saw the hawkers reoccupying the footpaths and resuming their business. In Dhaka street hawkers are doing brisk business on footpaths along the busy roads with the blessings of a section of influential people and political activists along with some dishonest members of the law enforcing agencies in exchange for millions of taka every day. It will not be easy for the city mayors to make the footpaths free. Pedestrians cannot walk freely along the footpaths which are occupied by hawkers and makeshift shops. It is known that the hawkers and makeshift shop owners are doing so by paying Tk 50 to Tk 500 every day to people who control footpaths.   South city mayor's venture was a noble one and he should continue with the same attitude and spirit. He may fail once or twice, but eventually people will queue behind him to achieve the mission.
