Impact of hawker-free footpaths

THE drive by DCC South to free the footpaths has already started bearing fruits. Indeed, it has become easier for us to move along them. For example, I do not find any hawker occupying footpaths in Motijheel area. But there are still a lot to be done as footpaths in other crowded parts of the metropolis are still occupied by hawkers. The common people have all the sympathy for these small traders on footpaths but we cannot let them occupy it and create inconvenience for the pavement walkers and traffic. I am sure if the law enforcement agencies can stop car parking on the road, the situation will further improve. The city corporation is narrowing the footpaths so that hawkers feel discouraged to sit there. I hope the authority will continue its drive to keep the footpaths free in all areas of metropolitan cities. I also hope that the government will take a long-term plan to rehabilitate the hawkers permanently.
