ROADS and highways of our country are becoming increasingly risky for our people to negotiate as deadly accidents have become a regular phenomenon on these roads. We saw on February 11, 2017, a serious accident taking place with a death toll of 25 people. Thirteen people died in an accident at Faridpur. The main reason behind such high number of deaths is reckless driving by drivers. At the same time, there is an undeclared race among bus drivers on the highways. The passengers are mere silent spectators as they want to reach their destination somehow.Â
Every year, many lives are lost in mindless accidents which could have been avoided. Reportedly, 8642 people lost their lives and many people serious injured in 2015 alone. We must not forget that death of a man in a road accident makes life uncertain for his family. More importantly, the victim of the accident was innocent who had to die a tragic death for no fault of his own. We see a sharp rise in the number of road accidents during Eid and other festivals. The authorities concerned must take all possible measures to put an end to reckless driving which is singularly responsible for accidents on the roads. Speed limits must be strictly enforced and anybody violating the norms must be brought to justice. Crime should not go unpunished this way.Â
