THE shocking incident at Holey Bakery in Gulshan has left us speechless. A group of people, mostly foreigners, were dining at the Spanish restaurant. All of a sudden group of terrorists entered the scene and started shooting indiscriminately. It is not yet clear how many of the diners died from the attack, but they were immediately made hostages of a gruesome gun attack. The Islamic State immediately claimed responsibility of the attack but the government maintains the terrorists were home-grown. The world media gave a wide coverage of the incident. We all know about what happened later. As many as 22 human lives were lost and people went through an agonizingly long period of uncertainty and insecurity. We can only feel sorry for them. The government declared two-day national mourning.
The Gulshan episode has come to an end. Some of the hostages were rescued and the rest died an unfortunate death for no fault of theirs. The incident exposed our weaknesses against situations like this and pinpointed how vulnerable we are against terrorist attacks.
I think the government should take a good look at the situation and organise all its resources to fight the militants. This may not be the end. Similar incidents may occur in future also. We have to fight terrorism with unity and it is no time to play the blame game. I believe for once our politicians will forget their petty differences and fight terrorism together.
