Extensive farming of broccoli

BROCCOLI is a winter vegetable which is very popular around the world. Many tasty and mouth watering dishes are prepared with broccoli as their main raw material. All eminent and prestigious food shops in the world offer delicious items made of broccoli. We are not a leading producer of broccoli and in fact we grow a very negligible quantity in Bangladesh. Broccoli looks like cauliflower but its colour is green and not milky white like cauliflower. Broccoli is a very high-value vegetable from nutritional point of view. It is full of vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants. Soil and winter weather in Bangladesh is very favourable for cultivation of broccoli. Cauliflower is another winter vegetable in Bangladesh which grows in huge quantities throughout the country. Cauliflowers are cultivated in such huge quantities that in peak season the price comes down to a level which is below the production cost at that time and the growers become frustrated. The Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) needs to import broccoli seeds and distribute those to all cauliflower farmers. The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) should encourage farmers to allocate half of their land used for cauliflower cultivation every year for cultivation of broccoli. It should also transfer technology to farmers to grow the vegetable and Bangladesh people will be able to derive the double benefits of tasting and acquiring nutrition of broccoli as well as cauliflower. Farmers will also get a good price for both as both cauliflower and broccoli can be grown in large quantities. I would like to urge upon the BADC and the DAE to take up projects for massive cultivation of broccoli throughout the country from the coming winter season.
