Drain on state coffers

The great debacle undergone by the costly and ambitious railway project involving DEMU trains is saddening. What a great drain on the exchequer! It brings to mind the laidback and amateurish role of our policy planners while taking up a massive project. The fiasco sharply points to the acute shortage of genuinely expert persons in our railway department. Many also smell a rat in the whole process.
A developing country like Bangladesh cannot afford this luxury of spending millions of dollars on a poorly researched project, only to abandon it later for its unsuitability. Apart from the diesel-electric multiple unit (DEMU) project, many small-, medium- and large ventures are being taken up. They are later dropped due to losses or dysfunction. This wastage should be stopped.
