MAYOR Hanif Flyover from Gulistan to Jatrabari is a pride of Dhaka and it is by far the longest flyover in the city. It was opened three years ago and has been providing useful services to the people. Most importantly, it has greatly reduced the travel time for people going out to southern suburbs and beyond. But unfortunately, the road below the flyover is the worst in the city. One wonders why and how such an important road has remained in such a bad shape for such a long time! It was a dream come true project for the city dwellers, as one can now commute from Gulistan to Jatrabari in just 10 minutes through Hanif Flyover while, in the past, it used to take about an hour to cover the distance. Both electronic and print media frequently report about the condition of the said road, but sadly very little effort has been made by the concerned authorities to improve the situation.
I wonder if an important road like Jatrabari road remains neglected for such a long time, what happens to roads in rural areas. Poor maintenance of many roads in Dhaka is the main cause behind perennial traffic jam in the city. We hope this road at Jatrabari will be immediately repaired as winter is approaching and it will be the best time to repair it. Once the Jatrabari road is repaired it will help reduce the traffic congestion in the city and its surrounding areas. Â
