AN English daily carried a front page report on the subject on October 4. It was a heartening piece of information that gave us some hope to demolish the wall of poverty that surrounds our society and has to be tackled with top priority. The sooner the better for the nation. However the statistics provided with the report were possibly extrapolated from parameters that may be subjective. May be that it could be an educated idea based on some indirect conclusions and definitely not on direct numerical data.
However, even if it is so; it may have been based on a combination of information gathered both from government and many NGO' sources. Undoubtedly, many NGOs are making their best efforts to tackle this large and widespread issue through various means by enhancing poor people's employable potentials and not just by providing direct material or financial assistance. This is an important national issue that should be given top priority through various means, like 'birth control' at the levels where it is most needed, as well as  through vocational development with the needed tools and hands-on training that can enhance various avenues of 'piece-rate' work, like, shoe repair, tailoring and even 'household services'.
In this respect; for Muslims; "Zakat" is a simple way of financial contribution that is given to the poor who are in need, be it within or outside the extended family. This is an important compulsory religious obligation for all well-to-do Muslims. Further, there are many 'Zakat Funds' that are organized through orphanages and other groups that fulfil the required functions to generate income to help the poor and enable them to stand on their feet. Everybody giving Zakat or other forms of help or support to the needy, deserves our appreciation for the support extended.
