WE regularly find ourselves included among the top corrupt nations of the world which is unfortunate to say the least. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has a lot to do in this respect. ACC was formed in 2004 but it contributed very little so far to curb corruption in the country. In the backdrop of widespread corruption, it was indeed heartening to note that ACC has of late clamped down on the dishonest bankers who are involved in sanctioning huge loans illegally to various individuals and organizations and creating mountains of non-performing loans. It can be described as a matter of mega theft of public funds. People's trust on the banking sector has been shaken by rampant corruption by a group of dishonest bankers. ACC has already arrested 73 bank officers and 150 entrepreneurs for massive corruption. Many large business conglomerates have borrowed millions of taka from various private and government banks and they are not repaying their debts. Many business people having close links with the high-ups in the government have looted our money and the preceding Commission could do very little to stem the rot as people involved in plundering public money had close links with high-ups in the government and the ruling party. I believe that the ACC is now proceeding in the right direction and it will receive people's blessings if the rising graph of corruption is arrested. Additionally, the country will be able to achieve its desired economic progress faster than ever before.
