THE bachelors in Dhaka are facing a great deal of trouble on their way to find a place to live. Hundreds of thousands of bachelors live in Dhaka for work and study or both. Problem starts when they want to rent a house. Most landlords are unwilling to rent out their houses to bachelors and even if they agree they ask for exorbitant house rents. As a result, the bachelors have to opt for backward areas of the city and find a place to live in groups. This is popularly known as 'mess'. The situation has aggravated further recently due to rise of militancy in the country. In most cases, the militants were young and bachelors, and were found to be hiring an apartment and living there in groups. This was revealed by investigations and raids conducted by the law enforcing agencies. This has led the land owners to tighten their grips further in renting out their houses to bachelors and the bachelor young men who do not have their own houses in Dhaka are in a deeper problem. Â Those who are living alone are facing hard times and they have nowhere to go. I hope the authority will take problem into consideration and save the bachelors from this mounting problem of accommodation in the city.
