Lack of safety for women

Lack of safety for women

I wrote in this column before also on the issue and expressed my growing concern about women's safety in our country. Lack of women's safety bothers me a lot because I am a woman too and I also have to step out of my house everyday for different purposes. Media reports on harassment, rape and murder of women unnerve us and as women we feel insecure to go out.  Crime against women is rising in our society and the law enforcing agencies are not doing enough to curb the crime. Women organizations and their leaders are staging demonstrations regularly and voicing their protests against ongoing crimes against women.
As a result of growing insecurity of women, many parents are unwilling to send their daughters to schools and marrying them out early. In this way, girls are being deprived of opportunities to establish themselves in later life. Society knows about it, but very little is being done by the concerned authorities to reverse the situation. We also know very well that a society cannot achieve desired progress keeping half of its population i.e., women insecure and unsafe.  Now we have women as our Prime Minster, the Speaker of Parliament and Leader of the opposition, but the security status of our women leaves a lot to be desired. We must ensure security for our women if want to prosper as a developed economy and improve the lot of our people.
