Importance of counselling in reducing road accidents

HELAL UDDIN, a poor farmer, who lives from hand to mouth, was still dreaming of a better life as his only son Akbar graduated from the university. His dreams were shattered as his only son Akbar suddenly died of a road accident on Dhaka-Comilla highway. Not only Akbar, there are many families who lose their near and dear ones in road accidents. After every accident causing death and injury to passengers, a series of meetings and rallies are held and human chains are formed in front of the National Press Club. Seminars are also held highlighting the significance of safe driving. But similar seminars are not held to offer counselling to the drivers to make them realise the tragedy befalling the families of the victims. If such seminars are held, surely some of the drivers attending the seminars would be remorseful and show their positive attitude towards safe driving. Definitely, psychological counselling of drivers is vital to bring down the number of road accidents and making roads safer. Psychological counselling means counselling the drivers individually or in a group and making them understand how they are destroying the dreams of many families by careless or reckless driving. The law enforcers should team up with psychological counsellors and offer counselling for the drivers that might be helpful to reduce road accidents. On the other hand, video clippings of rash driving and consequences thereof may be shown to the drivers to make them understand the extent of damages caused to families of the victims. This will have a positive impact on the psychology of the drivers and motivate them accordingly. It will also help them refrain from reckless driving. As a result, the number of road accidents may come down.
