Illegal parking on footpaths

Illegal parking on footpaths

Parking on footpaths is very common in our city and we see cars being randomly parked on the footpaths and narrowing the walking space for the pedestrians. As a result, the pedestrians are forced to walk along the roads which not only hampers vehicular movement but is also dangerous for them. All these are happening in presence of the law enforcers.
A few days ago, I saw a few cars were parked on the footpath of Gulshan Avenue and members of law enforcing agencies were present there, but they were not making any effort to get those cars removed not to speak of penalising the errant drivers who parked the cars. Traffic jam is a regular phenomenon in our city and city dwellers are paying for it dearly as they are losing many working hours due to traffic jams.
Every day many working hours are lost in this way. As citizens we must realize that footpaths are meant for walking from one place to another and if we park our vehicles on the footpaths,it will complicate the situation further. Dhaka city has less space compared to its large population.
If problems on the roads are solved, we can move ahead with greater speed. The traffic department should pay more attention to keeping footpaths free from illegal parking as well as beggars and vendors. As citizens we should also cooperate with the law enforcers to help them bring discipline on the footpaths.
