MIGRATION cost is high in our country compared to the neighboring ones. According to a World Bank survey report, Bangladeshis pay the highest cost for migration and it is difficult to get back their initial investment in 5/6 years. If we can have the migration cost reduced, more young people will be encouraged to go abroad with a job. This will help the economy flourish in a big way. Every year, thousands of young men and women join the labour market, but we do not have enough employment opportunities for them and they have to depend on outside sources. We see a big chunk of money is taken away from those who get employed outside the country, courtesy of manpower agents. And the amount demanded by them in each case is often too exorbitant. No one would mind if the middlemen charge a reasonable commission for their service, but most of them do not do the same and the desperate job seekers finding no other alternatives accede to their demands.
Every year, Bangladesh receives remittance from the Bangladeshis who are working abroad. In the coming years, Japan, Europe and even China and some other countries will need manpower from outside to fuel their economy as the populations in those countries are ageing. We can take advantage of the situation by sending more manpower from Bangladesh.
