ON October 31 people from different parts of the world celebrated Halloween. Halloween does not only mean attending fancy dress or costume parties nor does it indicate carving pumpkins into Jack-o'-lanterns. Nor is it not merely about visiting haunted attractions and listening to horror stories by lighting bonfires. It includes all of those and much more. According to Wikipedia Halloween is an occasion observed in a number of countries on the eve of the Western Christian feast of Allhallows' Day. Ours is a country which is known for 13 festivals in 12 calendar months as it has been known through the ages. Already there are some places around the town that have started preparing for the event. And each one looks more adventurous than the other. One of the most popular hotels in Dhaka city, Six Seasons, came up with Haunted House Season 2. Just by having a glimpse of the event in their Facebook page one had a bit of goosebumps. For some one who was not afraid of darkness, this place was a great source of pleasure. People who were adventurous and wanted to enjoy the lighter side of Halloween, wore fancy costume and headed for Haunted House Halloween night at Baridhara DOHS convention centre. Some headed to the Halloween Expo 2016. In both the places there were tricks or treats. They were delighted with live music, magic shows, fancy dress competition and what not. It was the first-ever Halloween Carnival. The objective of the organisers of this year's Halloween was 'Calling all witches, monsters and ghosts Glazed will be your host!' Glazed is situated in Dhanmondi, while PBS hosted its 'Halloween Festival of Fear 21<16' with 5D horror shows and much more fun-filled attractions at Shantinagar where the PBS store is located.
Many in our country are not aware of this custom. Please educate them by buying a handful of candies and distribute the same among the poor kids in your area or to the kids of your household workers. Even though they might not understand it they would simply smile when you give the cookies to them - and that is all that matters. Bangladesh has adapted many festivals from outside and Halloween could well be introduced in our society, like as they say 'When black cats prowl and pumpkins gleam may luck be yours on Halloween!'
