ACCORDING to a survey of 2016, at least 8,642 people died and 21,856 were injured in road accidents across Bangladesh last year. As Bangladesh is a poor county, death toll of road accidents makes us poorer when a victim killed or injured happens to be the head of a family or the only earning member of a family. We find news of road accidents frequently in newspapers and electronic media everyday.
But around 40 per cent of total accidents do not get media coverage at all.
Overtaking, overloading, exceeding speed limits, and reckless driving are considered to be the main reasons for road accidents. Many drivers, passengers, and pedestrians are either not conscious or do not care for traffic rules and regulations. Use of headphones while driving is also responsible for road accidents. We have to be aware of road accidents. And newspapers and television must come forward to sensitise the people through publication and telecast of reports on road accidents, the reasons and consequences thereof.
