AS a resident of New Eskaton Road, now Rashed Khan Menon Sarak, for more than last three decades, we are elated to learn that both the elected Mayors of North and South Dhaka city corporations have been given the status of cabinet ministers to enable them to provide better services for the people. They were elected more than a year ago, but their election pledges as held out in their manifestos are yet to be fulfilled.
New Eskaton Road is the divider between Dhaka North and Dhaka South city corporations. Thus one side of footpaths belongs to Dhaka South while the other portion belongs to Dhaka North. Garbages dumped years back are now decomposed while footpaths have disappeared under the flyover being constructed stretching through Malibagh-Maghbazar-New Eskaton. The under-construction flyover will aggravate the existing traffic gridlock. The flyover suddenly stops midway at New Eskaton instead of crossing Banglamotor-Nazrul Islam Avenue as hundreds of vehicles including rickshaws are seen waiting to cross Nazrul Islam Avenue after crossing the hurdles at Moghbazar portion and it is not difficult to understand what will happen when vehicles cross the avenue. Can the mayor really conceive of the traffic jam that will be created after the flyover is complete?
