FAKE and inferior quality medicines available in the market are direct threats to public health. Instead of curing diseases they aggravate health problems and further complicate them. There are media reports that market is flooded with fake and copied versions of famous medicinal products manufactured by reputed companies.
It is surprising that foreign medicines are being sold on the footpaths. We see even educated people buying these medicines oblivious of great danger they may have on human health. As these medicines are known to be manufactured by well known companies, faking these products has become a lucrative business and those who are involved in it are minting money.
The law enforcers can make a major difference in the situation. They have a bigger role to play in eradicating these social evils. It is true that some traders of such fake medicines are occasionally held by them, but they come out through legal loopholes. The battle against fake and low quality medicine is a difficult and lengthy process due to the nature of the business. If necessary, laws should be amended and agencies should be further empowered. The drug stores involved with manufacture and marketing of fake medicines must be awarded exemplary punishment in order to restrain others from doing the same. It is a criminal offence and should be dealt with accordingly.
