Export of cattle residue

Export of cattle residue

The World Bank and economists of Bangladesh frequently suggest diversification of export basket of Bangladesh. But no commendable ventures are seen so far.  It is estimated that four million bulls, ox and cows are slaughtered throughout the year in addition to three million on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha in Bangladesh. The hides of those slaughtered cattle are processed in ternary factories. But waste residue like, bone, horn, hoof, penis, urine, bladder, intestine, fat, ear, tale etc. of the slaughtered cattle mostly are thrown away. Only bones are used to produce poultry and fish feed. A handful of exporters export a negligible quantity of horn, hoof, penis, urine bolder, intestine, ear and fat of the slaughter cattle to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
A substantial amount of foreign currency could be earned from export of those waste residues of the slaughtered cattle. The Bangladesh Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) needs to take an initiative and call a meeting with the existing exporters and find out strategies for collecting the cattle residues systematically, store scientifically and export those. Individuals and other private sector organisations can be encouraged. The authorities need to make media campaign in order to raise public awareness so that people do not throw away cattle residue but preserve those for sale to collectors.
