EARLY marriage is a social problem in our country that needs to be eradicated from the society on an urgent basis. We must include it in our national agenda as a priority issue as it is retarding our potential growth. Child marriage means "any marriage performed before a girl reaches 18 years of age when a girl becomes mentally and physically fit for responsibilities of marriage and child bearing". According to the United Nations, Bangladesh is among the countries where child marriage is rampant.
Poverty, insecurity and social customs are some of the main reasons behind early marriage. We have to change the mindset of the rural society and spread the light of education so that the girls are treated equally in the society with boys and are not looked upon as a burden. Eve teasing, stalking and sexual harassment also contribute to instances of early marriages. Early marriage leaves a negative impact on a girl's life affecting her growth as a worthy citizen. A weak, unhealthy and underage mother ultimately leads to the growth of a weak society.
It is a pity that in an age of incredible scientific development, we are lagging behind in terms of women development. We must create a social awareness to stop early marriages from being held. Let's us work together to make our society a better place for girls to live in and help them grow as capable mothers and worthy citizens.
