Donate blood and help humanity

THERE are misconceptions among common people about blood donation. Wrong perceptions also exist among the educated elites. Most people feel that if they donate blood they will feel weak and might fall sick due to insufficient blood. This is a totally wrong perception. When we want to donate our blood, a doctor first examines us if we are physically fit to donate blood and if found fit only then blood is taken out from us. Blood donation in Bangladesh is an activity conducted by different organizations like Sandhani, Red Crescent, Badhon and many more. It has been estimated that roughly 25 per cent of our blood supply comes from voluntary donation and another 20-25 per cent from paid donors. If the misconception is removed more people will come forward for this noble cause. Blood donation is good not only for the patient but also for donors. Donating blood reduces the risk of heart attacks and even cancer. According to a study of the American Medical Association, researchers found that those aged between 43 and 61 years had fewer heart attacks and strokes when they donated blood every six months. When we donate blood, our blood is screened and if anomalies are found the donors are informed. It really feels great if we can donate blood for some one who is suffering.
