Consumer rights need to be protected

CONSUMER rights are vital for protection of the citizens' rights. Sadly, citizens' rights are often neglected in many developing countries like ours.  Consumers' right is a largely non-existent terminology for the Bangladeshi consumers as the common people are often deprived of getting products and services they pay for. The consumers' rights are being violated randomly because of lack of consumer awareness. The government has a role to play here and it needs to create awareness on consumer rights. Rights of consumers are vulnerable in our country and we see the consumers being cheated every day in terms of quality, weight, and standard.
The government has doubled the fine for cheating the consumers in terms of weight which will now be one hundred thousand taka along with two years of imprisonment for traders who will be found involved in such malpractice.   Often in our country, the disgruntled consumers do not file a complaint as they consider it as a burden for them to bear. But it must be understood that reticence of the consumers further encourages the wrongdoers to continue their immoral activities.
The media should publish all news items on companies found guilty and fined for infringing consumers' rights so that this vital issue is highlighted to make the consumers more conscious about their rights.
