CHILD labour is a nagging problem for our society. It is so deep-rooted that it cannot be eradicated overnight. Every year, the United Nations observes "The World Child Labour Day" on June 12. The UN calls for a need to be united to eliminate child labour from the world. Childhood is a time for education to prepare the children for the future. But many children of the developing world come from poor families and do not get enough opportunities to be enrolled in educational institutions and join the workforce at a tender age. They are forced to take the backbreaking profession only to make sure that they get three square meals a day and a roof over their heads. In our country child labour has become a commonplace and around 5.0 million children are engaged in it. Bangladesh has passed a law prohibiting child labour, but it can not be stopped fully as we cannot ensure food and education for all these children. There is no denying of the fact that extreme poverty is the reason behind child labour and once extreme poverty is eradicated, child labour will be automatically eliminated. Let us make our country a better place for the children and ensure that all children get the opportunity for education so that they can prove their worth and prosper. We simply cannot let our future lose its way in an unkind and cruel drudgery of child labour.
