DESPITE being a hated profession, begging continues to exist in various forms in our society as the earnings from begging are known to be quite lucrative. It is said that a hefty amount is earned everyday through begging which cannot otherwise be earned with investment and hard work. Since people of our country are magnanimous and emotional, some people play tricks to extract money.
Recently I have had a similar experience of some begging activities which appeared to me a new dimension of begging. A few days ago, on my way to Shahbag in a bus, a teenage girl boarded the bus and was distributing leaflets to every passenger asking for assistance. People were giving her money generously without complaints. The girl could have led an honest life by doing any job like a housemaid or in any other capacity.
On another day on my way to Malibagh, I saw a woman who was otherwise in a good health condition got into a bus and was asking for help because she was starving. Her statement about starving appeared untrue as she did not look like one who could be starving and still maintaining such a good health. As a matter of fact, begging still exists in our society and has only been changing its form and dimension from time to time. It is quite clear that people doing a full time begging job are actually work-averse and want to earn enough money without doing any hard work like most of us. It is really deplorable to say the least.
